EDUCATE YOURSELF & YOUR DOG w/POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT TRAINING:

There are many positive reinforcement trainers that have studied animal behavior and that continue learning how to find better ways to improve their skills for the betterment of the animals who share our lives.  There are also the traditional or “old style” trainers who keep doing what they’ve always done and are often unwilling to use the proven new techniques that have evolved over the past few decades. Those who study animal behavior, no longer recommend traditional training methods.

POSITIVE vs. TRADITIONAL or AVERSIVE TRAINING:

Positive Reinforcement Training is the State of the Art method of training which uses motivation instead of force, dominance, or fear of punishment to train dogs. Dogs willingly look forward to training because it means treats, toys, play and communication with their human.  It’s fun, it’s effective, and most importantly, it’s the most humane and kind way of training dogs.

Traditional or Aversive Training is the old style method of training where dogs are intimidated, dominated or forced into submission. Traditional trainers believe that the best way to get your dog to obey is to threaten him with punishment. These trainers typically use chokes, prongs and shock collars, scruff shakes, leash jerks, etc. They shame dogs and may also use pin downs or alpha rolls which are cruel and frightening to the dog and potentially dangerous to the human.

ASK QUESTIONS:

Beware of trainers that “hang a shingle” without having any certification. And if they say they are certified, ask for credentials.

It’s essential that you know to whom you are entrusting your dog’s well being. The preferred certification is a CPDT.  This is a national certified pet dog trainer that is experienced, knowledgeable and uses positive techniques.

How long have they been training dogs?  Experience is very important but be careful here because although you want someone with experience, often times the traditional trainers have been using the old aversive methods for so long, they can be the most reluctant to change.

Can you come and observe them in a class if they teach classes?  Anyone should welcome this.

What is their method of training?  Do they use only positive reinforcement  What form of punishment do they use?

No one can guarantee their services.  Beware of the professional trainer who guarantees results.  There are too many factors involved working with a living subject to make an absolute guarantee.

A responsible trainer should be available to answer your questions about your dog’s behavior in the future once they have worked with them.

You want what’s best for you and your dog so ask questions.  Remember, if someone tells you to do something to your dog that doesn’t seem right…don’t do it!  It probably isn’t right.  You are the guardian of your dog.  Make the right choice with Positive Reinforcement Training.
