HUMANE SOCIETY OF CENTRAL ARIZONA CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

Official color rendering of proposed new shelter

THE NEED:

Since 1972, the Humane Society of Central Arizona (formerly Payson Humane Society) has provided a critical service to the community by ministering to the needs of the Rim Country's animals -- for the last three decades in an old house that was never intended to be an animal shelter.

It is important to emphasize that we are not a pound, but a shelter that is committed to rescue and rehabilitation.  Thanks to a committed board of directors, a dedicated staff and a small army of volunteers, we are able to hold most animals until the right home is available.

But the old shelter has reached the end of its lifespan and is crumbling.  About 1,700 animals pass through the shelter each year, far beyond its capacity.  We desperately need a facility that will allow us to better fulfill our mission.

THE PLAN:

Recognizing the critical need for a new shelter, we purchased two acres of land in 2005, directly behind our current facility.

We hired Shelter Planners of America, a company that has designed over 700 state-of-the-art shelters, to help design a new facility.  Amon Builders, a local company, has been retained to build a 15,500 square foot shelter.

The latest technology will be utilized to create a shelter that is quiet for our neighbors, with a frontier exterior that will be an asset to a revitalized Main Street.

The ratio of space will be 80 percent animals to 20 percent people.  The cats will have screened indoor/outdoor areas to enjoy fresh air and sunshine, and dog kennels will be indoors, with outside exercise areas.

The new shelter will include a surgical suite for low cost spay and neutering.  An area for sick and injured animals will have separate air flow to protect the other animals.  Another area will allow mother animals and their babies to live comfortably until the babies are old enough for adoption.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Our heritage is ranching, and animals have long been an important part of life in the Rim Country.  We all agree that it's time to build our new shelter -- so we can provide proper care to these creatures that give us so much in return.

The new shelter will cost $3.6 million.  While that's a lot of money, please remember that we are building a facility that will last for the next 40 years.

Together we can make it happen.  If each and every one of us gives what we can -- whether it's $10 or $100,000 -- we can build the shelter our animals need -- for today, and far into the future.

Please make your contribution now.  With you help we will break ground in January 2009, and be in our new shelter by September 2009.  With you help, our animals will be in a modern, safe, healthy environment before the end of next year.
